Skatta Games- Motivation behind the vision

Corey Reading the founder and inventor for Skatta Games was once asked, "Do you do what you love, or do you love what you do?" He pondered that for a moment and replied, “I love what I’ve done in my 34 years in my current career, but I’m about to do what I love and make my vision a reality for all to enjoy.”

His journey began 25 years ago after his daughter was born. Corey and his wife were just trying to pay the bills and looking for inexpensive ways to have fun. He had always been an outdoor enthusiast, enjoying sports, biking, fishing, surfing, and more. He also loved playing yard games like Bocce ball, lawn darts, badminton, and shuffleboard. However, he started to notice that there wasn't much in the way of anything new and thought, “if I could create a game that could be played anywhere by anyone, what would it look like?”

That’s when the vision for Skatta Ball took shape. Corey imagined a game that was a cross between your typical bar room or poolside shuffleboard, darts, and bocce ball, but in a backyard setting using balls instead of pucks or discs. After spending countless hours in his yard with spools of rope, duct tape, a set of old bocce balls, and pool discs to mark the scoring zones, Skatta Ball in its earliest and most rudimentary form was created. It wasn’t pretty at first, but it was effective, playable, and fun.

As time passed, Corey refined the game with better materials and created a different set of rules to keep it challenging, yet entertaining. He started having outdoor parties with other families and friends, and it was during these events he realized that he had something that people either wanted to play or watch others play. He had kids, parents, and grandparents of all ages forgoing the other games set up in his yard, all focusing on Skatta Ball. They wanted to buy it or have him build them sets to play at home. However, as life got busy being a Dad, coach, and husband - the game remained a fun pastime for him and his friends.

Fast forward 25 years, and the game and its design have vastly improved. They have had hundreds of parties, Skatta Ball tournaments, and lots of interest from others to build it. Sportcraft being one of them, so Skatta Games was created.

Through R&D Corey and his new partner, Mike Parillo, also created its sister game - Skatta Bag. This game uses the same concept of corn hole, but blends shuffleboard & darts into a more visually appealing and challenging game than corn hole gives you. It can be played on any surface by anyone, adding specially made two different sided bean bags. Tried & tested at parties & a few tailgates with the same results as Skatta Ball. People can’t walk away, so they thought let’s make this for the masses as well.

Skatta Games is thrilled to share this journey and passion for both Skatta Ball and Skatta Bag with you. We hope you find as much joy in playing these games as we did in creating them. We promise you, it will be a game you will play for hours with your friends. It’s 25yrs in the making!
